At Stonehouse Park Infant School we aim to encourage our children to develop a love for Design and Technology by providing them with them with the opportunities to work in a range of different contexts. For example; In school, our gardens and playgrounds, and also in the wider community.
The children have enjoyed taking part in community art ventures such a ‘weaving on The Green’ last year and annual events including the designing and making of lanterns for the Nightlight parade at The Stonehouse Goodwill Evening.
Design and Technology incorporates many skills such as designing, making and evaluating purposeful, functional and appealing products. Design and Technology also includes learning the principles of a healthy diet and cooking. Through topic work, all children enjoy exploring and tasting foods from other cultures as well as participating in cookery sessions. As a school, we actively promote healthy eating and making good lifestyle choices.
We encourage our children to be adventurous and confident in developing ideas and sharing them with one and other in a supportive and positive environment. It is an important part of the process for them to then evaluate, discuss and celebrate their achievements with each other at the end of a project.
Throughout our school, the children experience a wide range of Design and Technology experiences and opportunities, enhanced by a choice of quality materials and resources and engaging scenarios.
In Reception, the children have great fun designing and making robots and exploring the textures of different materials and objects. They also have many opportunities for building and construction throughout the year.
In Year One the children learn to follow recipes and order instructions. They design a home for a hedgehog and in the summer term; enjoy designing, making and testing their own boats.
In Year Two, a favourite activity is designing and making a house for a Fairy tale character, including printing the wallpaper and designing an opening door. The children also design Christmas cards with levers to add movement and interest.
In our weekly Forest School sessions throughout the year groups the children have many opportunities to work together to design, create and build structures, ‘houses’ and dens.
It has been noted by Ofsted, that by developing a pupil’s creativity and independence, it raises self-esteem and confidence across the curriculum and at Stonehouse Park Infant School, this is something we care very passionately about.
